Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams is a brave tell-all memoir by a woman who worked on international policy at Facebook for many years. She was attracted to the company because of its potential to do good in the world, to connect people and facilitate participation in democratic societies. What she discovered when she got to Facebook, though, was utter disinterest in engaging with the leaders of other countries to push forth these ideals. Instead, Facebook’s leadership manipulated political outcomes around the world, focused only on the bottom line (getting more people using the platform so they could be monetized), and chose to ignore the well-being of millions of people, including their own employees. I love a good workplace memoir – bonus points if it’s a tech company – and Careless People did not disappoint. The sections on the company’s role in the 2016 election were especially horrifying. This book was a big win for me.
