Julie Chan Is Dead by Liann Zhang is not my typical fare – a thriller with some hints of horror – but I was intrigued by the plot and decided to pick it up. Julie Chan and her twin sister Chloe were separated as young girls, with Chloe adopted by a wealthy white couple and Julie sent to live with an poor, opportunistic aunt. Chloe becomes a wealthy influencer with no interest in a relationship with Julie, except when it benefits her financially. But when Chloe calls Julie and leaves a cryptic voicemail, Julie travels to New York and discovers that her twin is dead. Rather than report her death, Julie makes an impulsive move to assume Chloe’s identity and enjoy her lucrative life of endorsements, free products and fancy parties. I enjoyed this first half of the novel. From there, though, Julie Chan Is Dead heads off in a very dark direction. Chloe was part of a tight-knit group of influencers following a Queen Bee influencer named Bella Marie, and when Julie/Chloe is invited to a secretive weekend trip to a deserted island with the Bellas, as they’re known, things get weird – and dangerous. Again, this is really not my type of book, especially when violence and the vaguely supernatural come into play. I was interested to see how it ended and finished it despite the fact that it got too unhinged for me. There are many fans of this book, though, so if thrillers are your thing, give it a try.
