Before I picked up the memoir Awake, I hadn’t heard of Jen Hatmaker, who was well-known as an evangelical Christian media personality who also had an HGTV show with her husband and five kids. Instead, I was interested in her book because of her story about leaving her marriage to a pastor upon learning of his affair with another woman. Her life completely crumbled the night she overheard him whispering on the phone from their bedroom, and as she rebuilt it in the following months and years, she began to question the fundamentals of her faith and the role of marriage. That’s the part I came for, and Awake didn’t disappoint. I appreciated Hatmaker’s candor, including her taking shared responsibility for the faults in the marriage, as well as her clear-eyed explanation of how traditional Christian marriages set women up to fail and suppress their success and achievement. She has since left the church in which she grew up and has found other outlets for community and activism. This was a good entry in the divorce memoir genre and I am glad I read it. I also did Awake on audio, narrated by Hatmaker, which was a good way to go.
